ON Saturday Barry Athletic 1st XI travelled to Newport to take on Newport Fugitives and were asked to bat first on what turned out to be a nail biter.

Barry scored 116 all out with some rather unfortunate umpiring decisions with 3 LBW’s coming in the Barry innings the only real score of note was David Goodway who has been showing fine form all season scored a hard work 47 in 98 balls.

Newport Fugitives reply got off to a good start and they were going along well and were 115 for 7 when a once in a life time thing happened Bill Usswald who at this time had figures of 4 for 21 and with 3 dot balls in his over was bowling quite sublimely, when he had the Fugitives number 8 out LBW the score was 115 for 8 and The Fugitives only needed another 2 runs to win the game, very next ball Usswald bowled the number 10 batsman for 0, now the score was 115 for 9 and everyone biting the nails in anticipation at what could happen 2 runs to win, 1 wicket to win and Usswald on a hat-trick, Usswald came in he bowled the ball hit the pads and the whole team go up in a call for the wicket and after some time the umpires finger went up and Usswald with a hat-trick, and career bowling figures of 7-21 and a 1 run win for Barry Athletic, a great win and some very happy faces.

Barry Athletic 2nd XI entertained Newport Fugitives 2nd XI at home and reduced The Fugitives to 174 for 8 in their 45 overs with Ashley Baker finishing with bowling figures of 4 for 33.

In reply Barry Athletic scored 178 for 8 with Stuart Evans scoring 33 and Martin Baker 22 as Barry ran out winners by 2 wickets and a great weekend for both sides.
