Cadoxton Barry F.C. 1 - 2 Hirwaun
Hirwaun lost only 2 games last season - one, an Aberdare League match and the other, a pre-season friendly to Cadoxton Barry. Perhaps that was why CB started with a seeming lack of urgency. And while the defence was still waking up to the fact that they were playing, Hirwaun sliced through to set up a one on one with Harker. And it was Walters who won the contest to put Hirwaun into the lead inside three minutes.
Slowly, CB played their way into the game and Blackmore saw a header go marginally wide in the fifteenth minute. Then, five minutes later, a corner saw the resultant shot strike the angle of the left upright and the cross bar plus a little bit of the 'keeper's glove. But, at this stage, Hirwaun were still seeing as much of the ball as CB. And after Morgan had gone close for CB following a corner, it was 'keeper Harker to the rescue with a fine clearing save when Hirwaun looked likely to score.
But as half time approached CB began to get the upper hand, Dawson, Morgan, Adams and Weekley combining well on a number of occasions. One such build up initiated by Baker saw Dawson jinking past three challenges before losing out to a fourth. And so the half ended with CB in the driving seat, though a goal down.
The half time talk saw Hirwaun come out firing on all pistons once again and CB had to have all their wits about them to stay in contention. However, good play by Sam down the right set up Baker with an opportunity, but his driven shot was just over. Immediately, Hirwaun, broke up to the other end to force a fine clearing header out of Curran. And suddenly it began to look as though a goal might be imminent at either end as, first Matthews set up Morgan with a chance that fizzled out in the face of a really resolute Hirwaun defence, before Hirwaun did score from the counter attack that followed. Hirwaun moved the ball diagonally across field from left to right. The cross came in and it was Bailey who got on the end of it to send in a fine rising drive from the right to give the visitors a two goal cushion.
However, that was a lead that lasted barely two minutes as a Dawson free kick into the edge of the box eventually, by way of a few ricochets, found Baker to head home. The visitors now appeared to be tiring as, for the last twenty minutes, CB threw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at them in an effort to get the equaliser that their final quarter dominance deserved. Clever inter-passing involving Morgan, Baker and Dawson saw the last of the trilogy blasting over from just six yards out. And then a Morgan drive forward saw him cut a pass back to Adams who was unable to convert. And again, a fine solo run by Morgan saw his final effort coming up just short.
It was one way traffic now, but tremendous credit must go to a solid and determined Hirwaun back four which kept their side's noses in front in the face of the CB onslaught through to the final whistle.
Cadoxton Barry 2nds and a couple of 3rds 3 - 2 Vale Utd
Fiddler E, Hudson J (pen)
Vale Utd won the 1st Division of the Bridgend League for the last two seasons, but elected to play in the Vale League for this coming season. Therefore they are a well established side and will probably prove to be much too good for the Vale League Division Two that they have been placed in. This win for a CB 2nds side topped up with a few 3rds represents is no mean feat, therefore. Kyle, at centre back was outstanding, as was Alex Lee.
This was a good solid performance from everyone who turned out for the Seconds yesterday. There was great work from G Fiddler & Coles in the centre and there was a solid defense in K Mcarthy, Lee, M Angove and new comer Kyle. Some great football was played for a well deserved win. Thanks go to Tommy Taylor for standing in goal and all the new boys, some established 2nds and some 3rds. There could be some future First Team players among them based on this performance.
