GIRL power was to the fore at the St Andrew's Major Golf Club when 11-year-old Megan Cullinane won this year's Junior Championship.

One of just two girls in an 18-strong field, Megan overcame the odds when she won the competition by seven shots with rounds of 67 and 68 (net).

Megan, who took up the game six years ago, has been improving steadily under the guidance of coach John Hastings, and her recent success has given her further motivation to improve an already impressive game. At the age of just seven, she won a South Wales competition for girls which saw her playing in national finals at Telford Golf Club.

John said: "Megan is one of the most naturally gifted juniors I have ever taught and I'm sure she will develop into an outstanding golfer. She has a great temperament and never seems fazed by anything."

The standard of golf at St Andrew's is now so strong that four juniors are already representing the men's first team which shows the hard work of junior organiser Steve Thomas and the coaching from John is paying off handsomely.
