GELLIGAER v BARRY ROMILLY

Barry Romilly's Municipal League 1 title hopes suffered a setback at Gelligaer on Saturday when they took just four out of 14 points in an eight-shot defeat.

The game was always going to be difficult against a decent team and on a green renowned for its quirks and Romilly trailed by two shots after five ends. The home side increased their advantage to six shots by the 10th end, with the rinks skipped by Brian Foscolo and Jeff Wright playing well and helping counteract problems for the other two rinks skipped by Graham Cogbill and Mel Newman.

With six ends left, Romilly made tremendous efforts to get on terms, but the Cogbill rink went down by six shots and Newman’s four, despite winning the last six ends by five shots to three, still lost by 10 shots.

In charge for most of the game, Foscolo’s lost the last four ends but won by seven shots, while Wright's rink found themselves behind for the first time in the game after dropping a four on the penultimate end. With the game lost overall, it was vital for the rink to win and gain two points and, with Romilly holding one shot, two world-class bowls from Wright ensured success. Romilly : J Wright 21-20; B Foscolo 22-15; M Newman 13-23; G Cogbill 11-17. Gelligaer 75, Barry Romilly 67.
