CAPTAIN for the day Steve Provis played a starring role with bat and ball as Barry Athletic Cricket Club 1st XI got back to winning ways against Welsh Asians.

With Provis asking the visitors to bat, they were soon in trouble when Steve Jones removed Ahmed with the score on 17. Jones struck again with the score on 36 and then the skipper took three wickets - all caught behind by Nathan Baker - to leave the score at 104 for five. A partnership of 76 followed before Hellyar struck, and then the last four wickets fell - three to Dafydd Frost - for 35 runs in five overs as the Welsh Asians were all out for 215.

Barry's reply made a solid start before Hugh Smith was run out for eight with the score on 32. Following four catches behind the stumps, Nathan Baker came to the wicket and made a welcome return to form as he and Goodway added 82 for the second wicket before the latter fell for a fine 59. The very next ball Paul Murphy was out for a duck to leave the score at 114 for three, but this brought captain Provis (61no from 44 balls) to the wicket to carry on his fine form and, with Baker (a patient 73no), they took their side to victory on 218 for three.
