FOLLOWING the excitement of the Football World Cup, the summer of sport continues with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow between July 23 and August 3.

The Games comprises a total of 256 medal events covering 17 sports, many of which, including boxing, hockey, judo, bowls and rifle shooting, are available to Vale residents.

There are over 40 different sports and physical activities offered across the Vale for residents of all ages and abilities in more than 200 sports clubs and organisations, and the council’s sports development team has full information on its website.

On Saturday, July 26, from11am to 3pm at Central Park and King Square, Barry, residents will be able to experience a few of the Commonwealth sports at a special fun day.

The team has been working in partnership with Wales Squash and Racketball to develop new opportunities for juniors to participate in squash and assisted the governing body in delivering taster sessions in local schools in Penarth and Barry. They have also been working, along with Barry Squash Club, to develop new community-based squash sessions in Penarth and Barry leisure centres.

Athletics, badminton, hockey, netball, rugby and table tennis opportunities have also been developed in schools and community clubs as part of the Dragon Sport programme, which aims to increase the number of seven to 11 year olds participating in sport.

Working in conjunction with the team and local schools, Badminton Wales has been delivering training to local teachers and volunteers to enable them to deliver fun badminton activities within school and community settings. A junior badminton club is now running at Holm View Leisure Centre, Barry, for children and young people who want to participate in the sport outside school.
