NINE Barry Kyokushin junior students picked up four individual medals - a gold, silver and two bronze - and a team gold when they travelled to Hertfordshire for the Cadet Knockdown Kyokujitsu tournament.

The individual gold came the way of Justine Bolanos who produced five incredible fights in the category for seven to eight year olds (over 125cm), while Cerys Case was runner-up and impressed everyone in her three fights in the five to six year olds category (under 110cm). Third places went to Lucy Chick, who showed great determination in the category for 10-12 year olds (under 145cm), and Josie Allen after two strong fights in the nine years old division.

Enjoying another golden moment against eight other teams, Justine teamed up with Ben Bolanos and Lianne Lirio for success in the synchronised kata (pattern) division.

The Barry team received praise from many other competitors and heads and chief referee of the IKKU for their skill and standard.

Senpai Phill Sedgmond said: "Barry Kyokushin is incredibly proud of all junior students who attended and fought. They showed fantastic spirit, fighting ability and all were incredibly humble.

"This was a first ever cadet knockdown tournament for our juniors and they really shook up their more experienced and sometimes much bigger opponents. It really was a proud moment for me."

Also taking part for the Barry club were Sam Allen, Matt Mielniczuk and Tomek Czynzki, who, like their clubmates, trained very hard and showed great spirit and determination.

Barry Kyokushin train Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm-7.30pm (juniors) and 7.30-9pm (seniors) and Sunday (10-11.30am)
