WITH the summer holidays fast approaching, the Vale Council’s sports and play development team has unveiled a variety of activities for local youngsters.

Coinciding with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and allowing people to enjoy a taste of featured sports such as table tennis, rhythmic gymnastics and netball, a sports and play family fun day takes place at King Square and Central Park, Barry, on Saturday, July 26, from 11am to 3pm. Also featured will be a range of arts and crafts activities and giant outdoor games such as 'Connect Four' and 'Jenga.'

Open access play schemes in Palmerston Community Learning Centre, Barry, and Llanilltud Fawr Primary School will encompass den building, arts and crafts and water play for children aged four to 11 years, and sports activities sessions.

In partnership with Dinas Powys Community Council, the play development team run a family fun day at Murchfield Community Centre on August 20 between 11am and 3pm, where families will be able to experience a range of play activities.

In partnership with Barry Town Council, the team has organised two family fun days - Maslin Park, Barry Island, from 2-6pm on August 1, and Alexandra Gardens, Barry, from 3-7pm on August 6 to celebrate National Play Day.

Working in partnership with Communities First, the team hosts a number of sessions as part of the Doorstep Sports and Street Games projects. With funding support from Sport Wales, multi-sport activities take place at Iolo Park, Treharne Estate, on Monday afternoons, while there will be Futsal and multi-sport activities in the Castleland multi-use games area on Thursday afternoons.

Sports camps will run throughout the summer for disabled children, where a variety of activities will be delivered in partnership with Post 2 Post Coaching.

The team will also be a part of the Barry Island Weekenders organised by the council’s events team on August 16 and 17, and offer activities at the Vale Show and the Disability Strand Family Fun Day on August 15.

Rounding off their summer programme, the team will work in partnership with the Park Rangers to deliver football fun days at both Victoria and Romilly Parks on August 19 from10am to 3pm.
