WITH their Saturday game wiped out by the weather, Barry Athletic Cricket Club suffered further misery the following day with a comprehensive Welsh Cup defeat at Penarth.

Asked to bat, Barry, after the loss of Goodway and Provis, were soon up against things at 29 for two. As wickets tumbled, Barry slipped from 43 for three to 55 for eight, with only R Jones (29) making any contribution of note. Captain John Gee, Peter Hellyar and Daffyd Frost showed some resilience to add 50 for the last two wickets, with Gee being the ninth wicket down with the score on 74. After a last-wicket stand of 31, Hellyar was last man out for 21 and Barry were 105 all out.

Barry certainly looked in with a shout when promising paceman Frost (2-25) picked up two early wickets and Penarth were 31 for two, but the home side were soon in cruise mode as they reached the target in the 22nd over.

With Barry bowled out for scores of between 105 and 129 three times this season, Penarth were full value for their eight-wicket success.

BARRY: 105 all out (R Jones 29, P Hellyar 21; R Skone 3-11, M Thomas 3-14)

PENARTH: 106-2 (W Barker 42no, D Stevens 25no; D Frost 2-25)
