FAILING to capitalise on some decent bowling, the Sully Centurions Cricket Club 1st XI were to rue a series of dropped catches when they hosted Creigiau on a scorching Saturday at Burnham Avenue.

Batting first, Centurions lost Pavel (four) with the score on 30 and Tom Edwards (15) six runs later. Wickets fell at regular intervals, with the returning Ben Callow (25) making inroads from the top order. Jake Griffett contributed a dashing 29 and Owain Sullivan, batting at 10, hit a decent 22 not out as Centurions closed on a disappointing 171 all out.

After Lloyd (58no) and Innes (43) put on 64 for Creigiau's first wicket, the good work was continued by the former and Powell (18) who added a further 40 runs for the second wicket. When Lloyd was joined by Moore (32), the pair shared a half century partnership to guide their side to a seven-wicket win.

Cuddihy, Callow and Edwards were the wicket takers for Sully.

SULLY CENTURIONS 1st XI: 171 all out (J Griffett 29, B Callow 25, O Sullivan 22no)

CREIGIAU 1st XI 173-3 (Lloyd 58no, Innes 43)

GRIFFETT'S SIX WICKETS

In the reverse fixture, Centurions' Seconds were asked to field on a baking hot day and the home side amassed 234 for nine from their 45 overs.

There was some great bowling from Reece Bennett, who didn't take a wicket but conceded just 23 runs from his nine overs, and Rikki Griffett, who picked up six wickets.

Unfortunately, like the 1st XI, the side dropped a number of catches that could have made a big difference. Dropped twice before he got going, Creigiau's Thomas went on to top score with 80.

Centurions made a solid start in reply and Dave Sylvester and Munim Khan shared an opening stand of 37 before the latter was out for 25. Unfortunately, the batsmen never really got to grips with the low pitch and wickets tumbled. The only positive was that a batting point was achieved, but Sylvester was last man out for a marathon 27 over 43 overs as Centurions were all out for 125.

CREIGIAU 2nd XI: 234-9 (Thomas 80)

SULLY CENTURIONS 2nd XI: 125 (D Sylvester 27)

SUNDAY FRIENDLY

On Sunday Centurions visited Dinas Powys in a friendly that could have gone either way but was eventually edged by the hosts.

Batting first, Centurions were soon in trouble at 14 for three, but Jake Griffett survived a couple of early scares to register his second successive Sunday century. Griffett put on 114 for the seventh wicket with David Goodway (64no) as the score reached 231 for seven after seven overs.

When Dinas replied, Centurions struck in the first over, with the opener caught in the slips by Nick Jones for a duck to provide Andrew Lewis with his first senior wicket. Emma Davies chipped in with a wicket before Preston (48) and Clarke (32) put on 40 for the third wicket.

At the halfway stage, it was still anyone's game with Dinas on 116. A couple of wickets for Goodway (2-38) and Tom Pascoe (2-47) gave Centurions some hope, but Colley, with an unbeaten 70, and Piddock (10no) held their nerve as the Sully attack wilted.

Off the only two balls he bowled, the ever reliable Mick Fisher was struck for a boundary and a six by Colley as Dinas won by three wickets with two overs to spare.

A good match played in a great spirit.

SULLY CENTURIONS: 231-7

DINAS POWYS: 232-7
