AFTER all the wet weather, the Barry Athletic Cricket Club 1st XI was pleased to be in action when they travelled to Cardiff to play Radyr.

Barry captain John Gee decided to bat first, with openers David Goodway and Steve Provis carrying on from where they left off against Sully some three weeks ago and putting on 56 before the former was out for 20. Next man Rhett Jones added 45 with Provis (47) before the latter was the victim of a dubious lbw decision with the score on 101.

Despite the loss of four wickets for 37 runs, Rhett Jones fought on and was joined by Steve (Sticky) Jones to add 75 for the seventh wicket. Rhett Jones batted with some maturity and class to reach 97 before being caught at long on going for a six to bring up his century. His innings came from 89 balls and included eight fours and five sixes.

Barry’s innings closed on 221 for eight from their 50 overs, with Steve Jones unbeaten on 16.

Radyr’s reply started badly as they lost opener Lloyd to the fifth ball of the innings when Steve (Jonah) Jones took a remarkable caught and bowled.

This provided the perfect backdrop for a great spell from Dafydd Frost who took four for 33 from his10 overs as the home side were reduced to 85 for eight. Although there was spirited response from Peacock and Cordon, who added 70 runs for the ninth wicket, the Radyr overs ran out and Barry achieved a great 66-run win and 18 points. John Gee maintained his good start to the season with two for 21 in his 10 overs.

This weekend the 1st XI, hoping to generate an increase in support, are home to Ebbw Vale, while the Seconds are away to Tondu. The midweek side at home to Barry West End on Wednesday, May 28.
