THE Barry Romilly Bowls Club continued their erratic start to the season when losing their first Munro Cup game and then easily winning their last Carruthers Shield fixture.

LLANTWIT MAJOR v BARRY ROMILLY

Facing the Munro Cup holders, Romilly opened confidently, with the rinks skipped by Tony Freeman, Mel Newman and Bob

Wyatt starting well.

At the 10th end, Llantwit led by two shots, but, with Ray Hewitson’s rink improving, Romilly eyed a positive result.

Unfortunately, the second half of the game was a mixture of highs and lows for the visitors, with Freeman’s rink making

a single on each of the last eight ends to win 15-9 and Newman’s four scoring seven shots over the final three

ends to lose by just one shot. Unfortunately, Hewitson’s rink, who had fought back so well, dropped eight shots over the last three ends to lose 24-14 and Wyatt's four, leading by nine shots at one stage, pressed the self destruct button to lose eight of the last nine ends and by two shots.

The result was a 65-58 defeat for Romilly, who picked up just two out of 14 points.

BARRY ROMILLY v RHOOSE

Although unable to further their Carruthers Shield ambitions following previous results, both sides contributed to a competitive final group match.

By the 10th end, favourites Romilly were well ahead at 57-21 and continued in much the same vein to register an emphatic 125-38 win.

The Romilly rinks of Cogbill, Wright and Newman fired on all cylinders to register 34-7, 34-8 and 34-9 successes respectively and Fred Phillips' four chipped in with a 23-14 scoreline.

With both Saturday games cancelled, all Romilly players are asked to check for any updates on arrangements for this Saturday, May 24.
