IN their third Aegon team fixture of the summer, the Barry Tennis Club's youngest players - eight years and under (or mini-reds) - secured their first victory.

Opponents were close friends and rivals from Penarth Lawn Tennis Club, with four players representing each club in unpleasant and windy conditions. But all the boys demonstrated great sportsmanship despite the unfavourable elements.

Barry's professional coaching team - Vale Tennis Academy - also provide the coaching at PLTC as well as Cowbridge TC and the Vale Resort so there is a strong, but friendly additional element of competition between the clubs.

For many of the players, the summer Aegon fixtures are their first taste of competitive tennis, and the team format helps to boost confidence and a sense of fraternity amongst the players.

After all matches have been completed, the home team traditionally puts on a small post-match reception, and the children enjoyed baguettes, cakes, biscuits and crisps as well as the compulsory strawberries.

Barry won 12 of the 16 rubbers played and are currently in the middle of their league table, with one fixture to play.

The club is keen to encourage competitive play for all ages and abilities, and its members enjoy competing in team and individual competitions throughout South Wales.

However, fundamental to all activities organised by the club is the belief that sport should be fun, whether it's competitive or purely social, so, if anyone wishes to find out more about the club and its activities, please contact Penny on 07816 311263, email info@barrytennis.co.uk or follow on Twitter and Facebook.
