BARRY ROMILLY v KENFIG HILL

On Saturday Barry Romilly welcomed Kenfig Hill for their first Carruthers Shield group match and, on a perfect day for bowls, both teams struggled to find their weight and line on a heavy green. After five ends, ‘Rom’ led 19-12 before the visitors clawed their way back to trail by just three shots after 10 ends.

By the 15th end, Kenfig led 66-51, with only Graham Cogbill's rink doing well for the Romilly and leading 19-10. Although starting well, the rink skipped by Fred Phillips leaked shots to trail 19-10 on the 15th end and the other rinks skipped by Mel Newman and Jeff Wright were one and five down respectively at the same stage. Although trailing, Romilly felt confident of recovering the deficit but, every time Romilly were in a strong position holding shot, the Kenfig back players, in fairness, produced the perfect bowl to win the end and subsequently the game by 10 shots.

Romilly's travel to Pontyclun on Saturday in a must win game to give the side any chance of progressing in the competition.

Romilly rinks scores: G Rees, J Coles, B Foscolo, G Cogbill 20-21; A Bryan, T Bloomfield, C Collins, M Newman 22-18; G Eastment, P Gershenson, M Doyle, F Phillips 15-22; M Gershenson, R Hewitson, G Trepleton, J Wright 16-22. Romilly 73, Kenfig Hill 83.
