AFTER Caerphilly conceded Saturday's league game, the Sully Cricket Club 1st XI produced a very efficient performance in Sunday's friendly against Cardiff University Staff.

In glorious conditions at Bryn y Don, the visitors elected to bat and made steady progress until James Fullard, on his debut, took the wicket of Lashwayo in the fifth over. This was followed by a demonstration of electrifying pace bowling, with Fullard taking a further three wickets for a total of 14 runs. From the other end, and also making his debut, Inam Khan maintained the quality with four wickets for a meagre 10 runs from his allotted six overs. With M Saif and Crick mopping up the tail with a wicket apiece, the University side were all out for 98 runs from 23 overs. Only Karthick made any impact with the bat with a steady 26 not out.

In reply, Spartans' openers found it difficult to get runs against some accurate bowling, with only 12 runs coming from the first nine overs. Visiting captain Bash made the breakthrough with three wickets for 13 runs to leave the hosts on 38 for three after 16 overs. D Morgan and Fullard, however, produced a controlled batting performance to comfortably finish the game in 27 overs, with both batsmen ending on 26 not out in the seven-wicket win.

CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STAFF: 98 all out (Karthick 26no; I Khan 4-10, J Fullard 4-16)

SULLY: 98-3 (D Morgan 26no, Fullard 26no; Bash 3-13)

The ground staff at Bryn Y Don who prepared a playable wicket after the recent poor weather should be commended for their efforts. It was very much appreciated by both teams.

This Saturday the Firsts play Cross Keys, whilst the 2nd X1 play Mountain Ash. On Sunday Spartans visit Rogerstone in a friendly.
