A MIX of new and experienced competitors represented the Cadoxton Schools of Taekwondo at an International Combat Organisation Battle of the Celts.
Hosted by Rob Taylor at Pontypool Leisure Centre, the event started with traditional forms where Cian Allen took a top spot. Cody Jacobsen and Maddison Allen both finished second and there were third places for Jessie Blackley and Joel Wells.
After being knocked out of the pee wee point sparring competition, Maddison responded with third spot in continuous sparring.
Making her first appearance in the boys' and girls' advanced under 140cm section, Jessica just missed out on a podium place in point sparring, but fought her way into the finals of continuous sparring to chalk up a credible third place. Also competing for the first time in this section were young Jake Quigley, Cian and Joel, who, despite finishing outside the top placings, competed really well.
In the boys' advanced under 130cm, Cody lost out to the eventual continous sparring winner but picked up a silver medal in point sparring.
Competing for the first time this year after injury, Thomas Haysham took second in point sparring, while his lack of fitness showed when he fell at the first hurdle in continuous sparring.
The undoubted star of the day for the local club was Bradley Halford, who competed in one of the largest and toughest categories, and took first place in point sparring.
In continuous sparring, Bradley fought his way through to the final against some extremely tough competitors. The final consisted of two two-minute rounds, with Bradley just shading the first round and going on to dominate the second to complete a great double.
