THE SAYING goes if it's not broken, don’t fix it but Daniel Alsop clearly wasn’t listening as the Barry boxer stormed to another gold medal at the British Universities & Colleges Sport Gatorade championships.

After claiming gold in the men’s U67kg last year, Alsop was back at the BUCS Gatorade nationals on Friday, but this time fighting in the U63.5kg weight division.

However, the change of scenery did little to the 20-year-old’s fortunes as he once again climbed to the top of the podium.

This time at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge, it was Graham Neill, from the University of Sheffield, who felt the full force of Alsop’s talents.

And, after winning his second BUCS Gatorade national title in a different weight division, former Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg pupil Alsop was able to toast a job well done.

“I’m very happy and am glad I didn’t come to Sheffield for nothing,” said Alsop, who is studying architecture at Cardiff Metropolitan University. “You never underestimate anyone, and you’ve got to come in fit, no matter who it is.

“I saw footage of him (Neill) fighting and admit I did think he didn’t look that good. But he was very, very awkward and it was hard to gauge his style.

“In the later rounds, I opened up a bit, started hurting him and got the win.

“I won the weight above last year. I had two hard fights and fought a boy who was in the 75kg this year. So they were all a lot taller and, when you box people like that, you have to change your style a bit.

“I didn’t really suit it so I’d thought come down a bit. I, initially, struggled with the weight but I’m glad I did it – it’s a good achievement.”

Alsop’s victory in Sheffield has given him renewed vigour in the sport and, with the World University Boxing Championships taking place in Russia in September, the boxer can’t help but let his mind wander to the future.

“I know the World University Championships are in September, so that gives me something to aim for now,” he added.

“And this title in Sheffield gives me confidence that I can go on and perform well and make it to them too which would be a great achievement.”
