A BARRY darts referee notched up a tournament first last week when he officiated at the final of the Inaugural BDO (British Darts Organisation) Daily Mirror World Trophy.

Huw Ware, who was the youngest referee ever to officiate a World Championship final in 2013, oversaw the BDO’s newest major tournament.

The contest, in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, was held over six days giving new opportunities, for players yet to take to the oche on the main stage, to play alongside leading lights of the game.

The inaugural event’s guaranteed prize fund of £100,000, made it one of the largest in the game of darts.

The thrilling final, overseen by Huw and MC Richard Ashdown, was won by Yorkshire James ‘Jammie Dodger’ Wilson who beat Ross Montgomery 13 legs to 11.

Huw said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity once again. Both James and Ross played well all tournament and to be part of such an epic final was a privilege.”
