TONGWYNLAIS 1

CADOXTON BARRY 4

WITH promotion still a mathematical possibility, Cadoxton Barry's South Wales Senior Soccer League side have a few games to play against teams from the nether regions of the Second Division.

They should be putting these teams to the sword with the minimum of fuss and they eventually did so in this match, starting and finishing strongly.

With top scorer Weekley ruled out by work commitments, Dean Adams was paired up front with James Dawson. The full squad was M Davie; Sam Williams, Bickley, Royle and Hopkins; Thompson, Wells (D), Blackmore and Morgan; Adams and Dawson. Subs: Walsh, Christoforato and Matthews.

Dawson and Adams were quickly into their stride, disturbing the wild birds in the trees at the rear of the home goal, but, with Tongwynlais failing to muster a shot in the first 15 minutes, it was Caine Wells who got the party going, firing in a low shot after a corner.

The bare middle, coupled with the bumpy, long grass on the wings, were factors which inhibited flowing football and made control a bit problematical - particularly for first touch master Rhodri Morgan who got pretty much lost in the grass in the first half. He did manage to set up a couple of chances late in the half, but both were passed up.

The home side threw everything but the kitchen sink at CB at the start of the second half, but still struggled to penetrate. When Walsh came on, CB began to push forward even more, but were punished for conceding one free kick too many when Ton levelled on the hour mark.

When Casey Thompson sent in a low corner only two minutes later, centre-half David Royle restored the lead. Liam Blackmore, having dominated the midfield, was withdrawn five minutes later and Royle took a painful knock to be replaced by ‘Hoofy’ Hopkins. This meant major adjustments, with Matthews also coming into the fray.

Walsh and Morgan were involved in the move which finally crushed home resistance, with Thompson finding the roof of the net with a stunning shot from 35 yards.

If that goal was warmly applauded, spectators really warmed their hands when CB produced a real beauty of a team goal in the final minute. Morgan, Thompson and Dawson were involved before the latter's first-time pass found Adams who drew the 'keeper and slotted home with real style.

This Saturday’s game is a must-win clash with second-placed Tonyrefail.
