DISCARDING their rugby kits and dirty boots for really smart outfits, the Barry women's rugby team - Bombettes - were in celebratory mood at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

The home of the Welsh Rugby Union was the venue for the Welsh Women's League annual awards evening and, as Second Division champions, Bombettes were first to receive their award.

Accepting the trophy on the proudest night in Bombettes' short history and, in a room filled with applause and cheers, were captain Kim Jones and joint coach Frank Greig.

On a really special night for the Bombettes, two players - pack leader Lucy Cahill and Nikki Yapp - were both nominated in the the player of the season award category, and team manager Rachel Baron received a similar accolade in the coach/manager/volunteer category.

Proud captain Kim extended her thanks to all those who have been backing the Bombettes - players, officials and supporters. She added: "It's a really big thank you, on behalf of all the players, to everyone for such a great effort. And a special thank you to coaches Ray Gallivan and Frankie, without whom we wouldn't be where we are now, and the Three Horseshoes at Moulton for their sponsorship."

Bombettes extend congratulations to Kim and Louise Shanahan who were part of the Cardiff Blues women's squad crowned as regional champions for the first time in the history of the competition. The squad is picked from all the women's clubs within the region, and Blues clinched the title with victory over the Ospreys, who had won the regional competition for the last two years.

Bombettes return to action with a home cup clash with Croesyceiliog this Sunday, January 12; kick-off 2.30pm.

The team always welcomes new players - experienced or beginners - who can go along on to training sessions on a Tuesday (7-8pm) at Bryn Hafren or a Thursday (7-8pm) at the Barry Rugby Club. For further information, please contact team manager Rachel on 07889742153.
