THE annual 5x60 Badminton tournament was once again held at Cogan Leisure Centre in Penarth.

Fierce rivalries were destined to be resumed during this year’s competition with Stanwell School in particular, renowned for their aptitude with a racket.

Interesting to see was the depth of talent being churned out by the Vale schools, with many players performing to a very high standard and this made for very competitive tournaments at both age groups.

In the 5x60 events, each team of four players played two singles matches and three doubles matches, in a best of five contests. In a pulsating and exhilarating competition the runners up from the year 7 and 8 girls' competition were St Richard Gwyn and the winning team were from Cowbridge. In the year 7 and 8 boys' competition the team from Stanwell took the runner-up position with Cowbridge comfortably taking the top prize.

In the year 9 and 10 girls' competition the runners-up were Cowbridge with Stanwell deservedly taking first place. The boys' competition was very hard fought, but again Cowbridge took first place with a very spirited St Richard Gwyn side in second.

The winners of each competition will now go through to play in the regional event in the New Year where they will face stiff competition from teams from Methyr, Cardiff and RCT.

A special mention should be made for the ten volunteers from Cardiff and Vale College who umpired the competition and ensured it ran smoothly from the outset.

Date of competitions: November 27, 2013 (Yr 9+10) and December 4, 2013 (Yr 7+8).
