GCAW 2
BARRY SAINTS 4
HAVING had a tough game against Sunday's opponents in their previous encounter, Barry Saints set up with a 4-4-2 for their latest Lazariou Soccer League clash.
With this formation, Saints were making themselves hard to break down while being able to counter with pace and precise passing.
GCAW had few goalscoring opportunities in the early exchanges, although Saints' debutant goalkeeper Henry Dawson made one good save before his side broke the deadlock. Following some superb work in which he beat three opponents, David 'Evo' Evans drilled the ball across the box to Burniston who calmly slotted home. Saints soon doubled their lead when some great work by Burniston allowed Michael Evans to volley home.
With the half-time message being more of the same, Saints continued to keep the ball well in the second half with simple passing and, after 20 minutes, they grabbed a third. After an incisive counter attack, Michael Evans found space on halfway and his ball over the top was seized on by Matthews who made no mistake.
Unfortunately, Saints conceded a goal after taking their foot of the gas but responded in their usual fashion by scoring again, with a quick free kick picking out Burniston whose cross evaded everyone except David 'Evo' Evans who netted with a half volley.
Although GCAW grabbed a second, Saints held on for the win and set themselves up for a tough clash with second-placed Cardiff County.
