Fitting trophy success for Sue

EIGHTEEN former lady captains of Barry's Brynhill Golf Club faced damp and windy conditions competing for the Crystal Vase Memorial Trophy.
The winner of the 12-hole competition was Sue Holland (21 points) who just pipped Helena Coombes on count back over the back three. Sue has been the Brynhill past lady captains' representative for Cardiff and the Vale for the last three years and it was fitting that she should win the last competition of her term of office. Her efforts on behalf of past captains have been much appreciated and she has carried out her duties admirably. Her successor is Carole Allen.
An enjoyable lunch followed and the players were joined by four other former lady captains who opted not to play golf, but enjoyed the gathering. It was quite a nostalgic event, with everyone relating tales of their years and terms of office. So much history to recall.
An unusually mild October ensured a month of generally well-supported competitions, with the following results: October 8 - winner, Shirley Lewis, 35pts over 18 holes; October 15, Linda Hewlett, 20pts over ten holes; October 22, Margaret Codd, 23pts over ten holes.
Despite appalling recent weather, the shortened course was in excellent condition on October 29 when a few ladies played in the Hallowe'en Hags competition, with the winner being Linda Hewlett - 18pts over ten holes.
With the year drawing to a close, the ladies seem to have more social events than golf: November 9 - presentation night, when all the silverware is polished for presentation to the worthy winners; November 12 - Xmas fayre, with all non-members warmly invited - refreshments available; November 15 - annual dinner; November 19 - annual general meeting; November 27 - 'Hilarity with Hilary,' floral decoration instruction from Hilary West; December 17 - mince pie charity morning.
