St Andrew's junior golfers making their mark

WITH many golf clubs in the area having difficulty finding members, there has been an encouraging increase in junior membership at the St Andrew's Major Golf Club this season.
As a testimony to the commitment and imagination shown by organiser Steve Thomas, the junior section has doubled its numbers.
Through Steve's efforts, the juniors have taken part in weekly coaching sessions throughout the summer months and monthly sessions during the winter. Under the tutelage of their coach, John Hastings, members of both the development and junior squads have seen a massive improvement in their golf, and three are now regulars in the Glamorgan county squad and two were chosen for trials with the Welsh squad.
With competitions taking place throughout the season, both on their home course and at other venues such as the 2010 Ryder Cup course where their 'Road to Celtic Manor' tournament was held, the juniors have tested their skills on a regular basis which has paid off handsomely. The St Andrew's junior team went through the year undefeated in both inter-club and skills competitions against much bigger clubs such as Glamorganshire, Cottrell Park and Wenvoe and have set their sites on maintaining this standard next year.
With the support the juniors enjoy at St Andrew's from the owners, who help subsidise the coaching, the parents and, of course, Steve Thomas and John Hastings, the future looks bright for this relatively new club who are still welcoming new juniors to join either the development squad for beginners and the junior squad for advanced players.
