A FREE event for hundreds of Vale youngsters has seen them all enjoy ‘Oceans of Fun’.
More than 200 children from Barry, Penarth and Llantwit Major attended leading swimwear supplier Zoggs’ Oceans of Fun Day early last month.
Barry and Penarth leisure centres hosted the event which gave children the unique opportunity to take part in aquatic activities and even swim alongside Olympian and Commonwealth athletes.
The event featured, a morning in Penarth and an afternoon in Barry, of skills and games across different aquatic disciplines, with youngsters aged seven to 14 years old getting the chance to try each of the sports by rotating through the stations.
Activities ranged from fast swimming, water polo, rookie lifeguard and synchronised swimming.
The children also had the opportunity to learning about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a first aid technique used if someone is not breathing properly or if their heart has stopped, emphasising safety both in and around the water.
Adam Whitehead, former Olympian and Commonwealth champion for fast swimming; Fran Leighton, former Olympian and Team GB ladies water polo captain; and Katie Dawkins, Olympian and member of Team GB synchronised swimming passed on their knowledge and enthusiasm for aquatic sport.
The athletes also displayed their skills to all the children and spectators with demonstrations in the pool.
Children also had the chance to take part in a fun Race the Olympian event and each child was presented with a medal and a Zoggs Oceans of Fun swimming cap.
Jenny Alcock, aquatic development officer for the Vale, said: “It was so good to see so many young swimmers taking part in these new sports with great big smiles and enthusiasm. The athletes did a fantastic job at keeping the children engaged whilst having so much fun. The feedback we’ve had since the day has been really positive. A very big thank you goes to the very organised and friendly Zoggs UK and Total Swimming team, you made it all happen!”
