A CLOSE split decision defeat has seen Barry flyweight Andrew Selby lose out on a place in the World Amateur Boxing Championship’s final.
Selby will return home with a bronze medal following the narrow loss to Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Latipov.
After three tight rounds, the semi-final bout was scored in Lapitov’s favour by two of three judges, in a decision that seemed like it could have gone either way.
The result will be a disappointment to the 24-year-old who had been tipped for glory, following a second gold medal finish at the European championships earlier this year.
Selby, the current number two ranked amateur flyweight in the world, previously won silver at the 2011 World Amateur Championships and got through to the quarter finals of last year’s London Olympics.
