IN CONFIDENT mood, Sully Indoor Bowls Club opened this winter's national team championship with a convincing 23-shot victory (118-95) over Ogwr at the Bridgend indoor green on Saturday.
Collecting 20 out of 22 points, the Sully club was lifted by some excellent performances, typified by the rink (D Snelling, Joe Coles and Steve McKernan) skipped by Dave Wright. Trailing 10-2 after seven ends against opponents skipped by Welsh international Steve Hill, they fought back to lead 13-12 by the 13th end and went on to win 23-17.
The rink skipped by Fred Phillips was involved in a hard fought game against Ogwr skip Brian Tucker and, with score 14-14 after 15 ends, some brilliant bowls from lead Mike Davies and second Jeff Coles ensured a 23-17 success.
Other rinks skipped by Ken McLeod, Brian Griffiths and Martin Clarke were in control from the early stages to easily withstand any attempted comebacks from the Ogwr rinks.
The only losing rink was skipped by Brian Foscolo. Although bowling well, the Sully four, unfortunately, were up against an inspired Ogwr rink, with skip by Peter Luff and third H Jones producing some outstanding woods
to turn a number of ends over when Sully were holding shots.
The away win has provided Sully with a perfect start to the season and they will be hoping to take their fine form into this Saturday's home clash with Taff Ely.
