A BARRY ladies’ team reached the quarter-finals of the Blackthorn Cider-sponsored British Skittles Championships at their first attempt.
A win would have been a fairytale ending to the competition for the Barry Stars as exactly ten years ago, another Welsh team, the Railway Rockers (Cardiff), were crowned the very first champions. Since then, no Welsh team had made the podium either as a champion or runner-up.
Stars secretary Linda Lambeth said, although the team were new to the Blackthorn, five members had played in the competition before and she was hoping their experience would help.
In the event, Barry Stars beat the Royal Tots ‘n’ Lots, former runners-up, by a resounding 373-323, but met their match in the quarter-finals where they were pipped 322-318 by the Cotswold Wags, who reached the same stage of the competition last year.
This year's competition, organised by the Shoot Out Club, of Torquay, attracted 150 teams from all over the UK who embarked on a series of regional qualifying rounds, with the final 64 battling it out at the Riviera International Conference Centre. Blackthorn Cider put up more than £6,000-worth of prize money as well as trophies and cases of the legendary cider.
