WITH 20 boats taking part, this year’s Highlight Yacht Race (previously known as the TV race) at Barry Yacht Club was a resounding success.
Held on Saturday, the event attracted yachts from various clubs around the Channel to compete at one of the area's few sponsored races - Highlight Building and Property Maintenance, of Barry, have generously sponsored the race for the last three years.
Mike Bailey, skipper of 'Sanamiru,' from Cardiff, won the first prize of £100, with the £75 second prize going to Colin Brooks, skipper of 'Hidden Secret,' again from Cardiff. The third prize of £25 was won by Martin Rudkin, skipper of 'Tomahawk,' from Barry.
The North Shore Cup, an award for the best performing yacht from Barry against Porlock Sailing Club, was awarded to Martin Rudkin.
The South Shore Cup, an award for the best performing yacht from Porlock against Barry, was awarded to Billy Hogg on 'Pepper.' Sailing trophies were also awarded.
Following a successful day's sailing, a supper evening, prepared by Lizzie Brighton, Barry Yacht Club's favoured caterer, was held in the clubhouse, with over 50 guests enjoying local fayre.
The Barry club is grateful to John and Wendy Webb, of Highlight Building and Property Maintenance, for their continued support and thank all competitors for taking part.
Simon Morgan, the club's sailing secretary who has had to stand down due to work commitments, was thanked by the Commodore and club members for the excellent job he has done this year and wished the very best of luck for the future.
The Highlight Race is an open race and the club would welcome any enquiries about the 2014 race or about joining the yacht club – see www.barryyachtclub.co.uk or phone 01446 735511 for information.
