LLANDAFF 3rd XV 32pts
BARRY 3rd XV 10
FOLLOWING the historic victory last weekend, Barry Rugby Club Thirds were looking to continue the positive momentum in a tricky away fixture.
With the injury crisis with the 1st and 2nd XV, the 3rd XV was ravaged in Chris Prosser’s first game in sole charge. Only five of the starting 15 from last Saturday were available, and, therefore, he was forced to hand debuts to Frenchman Nicolas Llobet, wing Gareth Rees and Liam Middleton, and loose forward Paul Templeman. Prop Jason Thomas switched to No 8, with Dave McCann recalled to play at fly-half for the first time in recent memory.
Despite the number of individuals missing, the side put up a spirited display. Well-organised Llandaff raced to a 12-0 lead after half an hour, but Barry struck back with a rehearsed move of their own, with the aforementioned Thomas picking up and driving, before releasing Mike Avaient to score his fourth try in two matches. Chris Bailey, who has since been moved into half-back to partner Elliot Evans, was unable to add the extras.
Sensing that Barry might be threatening a comeback, especially with centre Glenn Griffiths’ strong running in midfield, the home side increased the tempo following the interval, taking advantage of some disorganised away defence to score two more tries to seemingly put the game beyond reach for the green-and-whites.
Once again, however, Barry came back. Despite numerous players playing out of position and the lack of experienced leaders on the pitch, an impromptu move saw Avaient once again crossing the whitewash. Bailey failed to add the extras.
Llandaff scored later on in the game to ensure they went away with the spoils, but all 19 players involved with the Barry side can afford to go home with their heads held high with a spirited display. With key players to return soon, the future looks rosy for the 3rd XV.
The 3rd XV continue their league campaign with a trip to Cardiff HSOB on September 28.
