FOR the first time Wenvoe Castle Golf Club had two entries in the Welsh Mini Masters - a national competition held each year in association with Shelter Cymru for junior players who are in the very early stages of learning the game.
The competition involved 11 regional qualifying rounds, with qualifiers going on to south and north regional finals.
Wenvoe's Kate Smith and Josh Harvey both made it to the regional final at Glyn Abbey Golf Club after qualifying at Heath Park and, with nearly 40 players competing at each stage, Josh finished a very commendable sixth in the boys' section and Kate went one better by finishing second to gain entry to the all-Wales final at Celtic Manor on October 29.
Club captain Barrie Jones said that, to have two entries in to the Welsh Mini Masters, was a great advert for the Wenvoe Castle Junior Coaching Academy and the excellent work and dedication by club professional Jason Harris. He added: "For the two talented juniors to progress so well, with Kate reaching the final, gives great encouragement to others taking up the game. This will give them both a great boost in confidence and I am sure they will both go on to be very good golfers but, more importantly, enjoy the sport.”
