WITH league fixtures completed, Sully Cricket Club 1st X1 ended their 2013 season with the annual Ty Hafan charity match against new opponents Glenwood.
Before the friendly, Sully were presented with the Full Toss Midweek League champions shield by Nigel Sutton, of A G Mortgages, who were this season's sponsors.
In another presentation, Yanni, president of the Sully club, presented a floral bouquet to Sue Hadfield, of the Seashore Grill, as an appreciation of their continued support. Both teams and sets of supporters went to the Grill after the game to raise funds for Ty Hafan, and the clubs have already arranged to contest this charity game again next season.
The sun shone for the players and the sizeable crowd and Glenwood elected to field first in a 35-over game, with batsmen retiring on 40 and bowlers having a maximum of five overs.
Sully maintained a run rate of five an over throughout, with Glenwood bowling a good line and length. They carefully pushed the score along through two partnerships of note and three well constructed innings. At 39 for three, regular league openers Howe and Morgan came together and pushed the score to 117 before Morgan retired.
The second notable partnership was between Howe and Murad who took the score to 167 before the former retired. Murad hit a four and also retired at 40. A couple of quick singles enabled Sully to reach 175 for five in the allotted overs.
In reply, the visitors started brightly but, with the introduction of Basit (one for 16) and Sumanth, the game was in the balance with Glenwood at 82 for three from18 overs.
The Sutton brothers increased the run rate but a well taken third catch of the game by Kieran sent L Sutton to the pavilion for a well hit 32. M Sutton (25) became Satish's second victim bowled and Kieran took two wickets to leave the visitors at 124 for seven.
O Pearce and R Evans saw Sully to the finishing line with some tight bowling. Pearce was unlucky not to take a wicket, and Evans produced an excellent spell (three for 15), including a superb third catch by M Howe.
Thanks go to Glenwood players and supporters for a lovely day and their donations to Ty Hafan.
SULLY: 175-5 (D Morgan 41ret, R Howe 40ret, Murad 40ret)
GLENWOOD: 140 all out (R Evans 3-15, Satish 2-9, Kieran 2-10, Sumanth 2-17)
The club's 2nd X1 has two games left this season, with an away match against Welsh Government (September 15) being followed on September 21 by the visit of Barry Athletic to Burnham Avenue for a first encounter between the clubs.
