Sports bounce back after early disappointments

AFTER a good pre-season with just two defeats against visiting Welsh League teams, Sully Sports made a poor start to their South Wales Senior Soccer League campaign with two defeats.
Despite outplaying visitors Porthcawl, it was generally a poor performance that led to a 2-0 defeat and it was a similar story at Grange Albion.
However, it was a different story in a Welsh Cup away game at Hafan (Llanelli), when a side, showing a few changes and some new signings, emerged fine 8-1 winners against a decent team in driving rain.
Boosted by the goals, Sports entertained last year’s runners-up, Cwm Welfare, in their next league game and, maintaining their normal positive style of football, emerged 2-1 winners with superb goals from Connor McKinnery and Alex Long. The defence was much improved from earlier games.
Man of the match was Long, who continually tormented the Cwm back line.
A very early Bruty Cup fixture saw Sports visit Cwm Welfare and, with a much changed side, fell 2-0 behind before Garon Davies replied from a well struck free kick.
Playing up the considerable slope,Sports played some great football but Cwm were gifted a doubtful goal when the referee allowed the forward to barge the ‘keeper into the net.
Goal given and a mountain to climb but enter Dan Lawlor who outpaced the home defence to score. With Long, Lawlor and Harding causing havoc, Dan James provided the perfect ball into the box for Lawlor to hit the winner.
The whole team was now playing the football Sports are renowned for and great displays from Harding and McKinnery meant a deserved win.
Last night (Wednesday) Sports were hoping to welcome back Mike Fowler and continue their improved form against visitors Cornelly United and this Saturday travel to Pontlottyn (leaving Lidl at 12 noon).
