Hungry 'Hippo' at the double

WENVOE ARMS 2
TYNEWYDD FC 5
BOOSTED by the return to the club of Ryan Lawlor and Mark McCathy, Vale Soccer League side Tynny got the new First Division season up and running with a well deserved three points against newly-promoted Wenvoe Arms.
Tynny pinned Wenvoe back in the blustery conditions and went ahead when a long ball from Gareth Union found Ross Smith, who curled home a powerful shot from 30 yards.
Failing to capitalise on their dominance, Tynny paid dearly when Wenvoe converted a penalty.
The Tynny half-time team talk was basically "take your chances" and, after about five minutes, a Lewis Union corner was easily headed in by Jodie "Hippo" Shepherd. With the Tynny still having the lion's share of possession and creating chances, it wasn't long before they grabbed a third when Lawlor found Ross Smith inside the box and he hammered home. And it was some neat play by Smith on the left wing which resulted in the fourth after his pinpoint cross found an unmarked Dale Miller who finished with a neat diving header.
Wenvoe managed to grab a goal back when a miss hit cross from the by line wickedly looped over stand in 'keeper Gareth Union.
Shepherd grabbed his second and Tynny's fifth when he curled a free kick in from 25 yards.
Man of the match was keenly disputed, but Shepherd got the required votes after a solid performance and two goals.
Thanks to Dave, of the Tynewydd, for the food.
All the Tynny lads would like to dedicate the win to Gareth "Bo" Long who sadly lost his father, Evan, this week; a minute's silence was impeccably observed by both teams at the start of the game. The club's thoughts are with his family at this time.
