St Athan 2 SP Construction 3

ST ATHAN 2 SP CONSTRUCTION 3

AFTER an enforced winter break lasting almost two months, SP Construction finally returned to Vale Premier League action on Saturday, February 9, with a tricky looking trip to St Athan.

Conditions were challenging, with an already heavy pitch saturated by further drizzle, but SP started well, keeping the ball on the floor and the passes simple.

They took the lead when a Jordan Price corner eventually found Lee Carter at the back post, with his left foot finish finding the back of the net. St Athan were playing on the break and soon found a reply, with their winger firing in a 18-yard shot via the post.

This fired SP into life and they began dominating their hosts, with Franky Bunn hitting the post and Carter going close on several occasions. They finally regained the lead when a quick free kick from Mike Baker found Lloyd Carter on the left wing.

His ball down the line found Bunn, who outpaced his marker before crossing perfectly for Carter to sidefoot home. More chances went begging for SP and they were made to pay just before half time when the home side scrambled in an equaliser.

The second half began with more of the same from SP although St Athan continued to look dangerous on the break and forced a couple of crucial saves from keeper Jon Knight. With Mike Baker marshalling the Saints’ dangerous striker well and Paul Palmer and Richard Drew also looking solid, SP pushed for the win and Bunn, Lee Carter and Danny Feltham all went close.

The away side were finally rewarded 10 minutes from time when the dangerous partnership of Bunn and Lee Carter again combined brilliantly, with the latter completing his first hattrick for the club.

SP held on comfortably and gained a vital three points to consolidate themselves in the top three of the division. With performances only likely to get better with a run of games, SP will be hoping their winter break is well and truly over.

As usual, players and staff would like to thank Jo and Dave at the Billy for the excellent post match food and drink.
