Hat-trick secures Sully Sports a semi-final spot
2:20pm Friday 8th February 2013 in Sport
Fochriw 1 Sully Sports 5
AFTER an early morning pitch inspection gave the green light to this South Wales Senior Cup quarter-final clash at Pontlottyn in the Rhymney Valley, Sully Sports’ senior soccer side made a host of changes due to work commitments and injuries.
Mike Fowler returned after a lengthy spell out, and some positional changes saw an unfamiliar, but still experienced, Sports team take the field to face midtable Fochriw.
Sports started well on the sticky pitch, with Nathan Blackie finding the net to give them an early lead. And it was Blackie who doubled the lead within minutes. The stunned home team soon hit back.
In the second half, Jon Cory again aggravated his hamstring and was replaced by Conner Ogden, and Kyle Lewis also entered the fray to extend the Sully lead. Blackie completed an excellent hat-trick and Fochriw were struggling when Alex Long completed the scoring for a good result for Sully with so many regulars out and a semi-final spot.
This Saturday First Division leaders Sports were due to visit Cwm Welfare for a humdinger of a game with their second placed rivals but, as Cwm have reached the sixth round of the Welsh Trophy, that takes precedence.
Good luck to Cwm who can progress to the last rounds of this all-Wales competition.
Training continues at the Barry Sports Centre Astro on Tuesdays at 7.15pm, and the Sully Astro on Thursdays at 9pm. It is important that squad members attend at least one or both sessions.
The Seconds host the Tynewydd in a Vale of Glamorgan League clash on Saturday at Swanbridge; players to report at the club at 12.45pm.
