A BARRY mum fundraising for her daughter to have a life changing operation has raised over half of her target of £60,000.
Emma Farrugia, of Dylan Crescent, cares for her daughter Niamh Tarran, who suffers from hydrocephalus, a cerebral palsy condition which means that Niamh is unable to walk unaided and needs either a walking frame or adapted wheelchair to move around safely.
Emma has spent the last few months fundraising so that three-year-old Niamh can have the pioneering Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation in America.
Emma has raised over £35,000 already and is edging closer to paying for the SDR operation, which costs £40,000, and £20,000 worth of aftercare.
Recent fundraising events have included selling Easter eggs in Peacocks in Barry where Emma works, which raised £430, and a charity bike ride from north to south Wales that raised over £5,000.
Katie Robertson and Fred Phipps-Harkus are also set to walk over 55 miles of the Taff Trail on Tuesday (May 28), and Bethan Evans is due to climb Mount Kilimanjaro starting next Saturday (June 1).
"It's going quite well and we are heading in the right direction," said Emma.
"The Easter egg fundraising was only done over two days and to raise that amount was fab."
Emma's next fundraising event is a UB40 tribute band, The Rats in the Kitchen, at Barry Memorial Hall next Saturday (June 1).
"They used to play down KR's on Barry Island," said Emma.
"They used to be fantastic and I've seen them a few times, so I hope they are as good as they used to be!"
The evening will run from 7.30pm til late, with tickets priced £12.50 and available from Emma on 07523363717 and Emma Farrugia on Facebook.
