EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 23, 1962:

*: Barry Town Council decided at a special meeting on Tuesday night to enter into negotiations with Butlin’s for a holiday camp to be established in Barry. That was the burden of an official statement made at the end of a two-hour meeting, but no indication was given as to the probable site.

* The fish wouldn’t bite for youngsters Nicholas Stamp and Francine Sullivan. In disgust they threw down their rods and resorted to the simpler pastime of paddling – until they stepped on something slithery. The "something" turned out to be a giant conger eel – five feet long and weighing 26lb – which for a while adorned the clothes line at the Stamp home at 1 Cross Street.

* More garages throughout Wales and the South West will be able to offer their customers lower price VIP petrols with the opening, on August 27, of a fully-automated ocean storage terminal at Barry.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 20, 1987:

* The sole surviving founder member of the Sea View Labour Club, Richard Stonehewer, received a specially engraved plate from chairman Cllr Haydn Holmes to mark the club’s diamond jubilee. 87-year-old Mr Stonehewer, a retired engine driver of Porthkerry Road, Barry, was presented with the memento of the club’s 60th anniversary at a special social evening held earlier this month.

* More than 1,000 objectors have signed a protest petition in the continuing fight by local residents, traders, councillors and Vale MP Sir Raymond Gower to prevent the closure of Barry’s Garden Suburb Post Office at Park Road.

* The future development and prosperity of Barry is being put into the melting pot next month when a Welsh Office inspector opens a public planning inquiry into wide ranging proposals for transforming the town’s docks and waterfront area.
