EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 9, 1962:

* An alderman’s request for details about a recent meeting between the Butlin organisation and three members of the Seaboard Lands Development Committee was refused by the committee chair at Thursday’s meeting of the Barry Town Council.

* First and second places in the Miss Port Talbot beauty competition held at Aberavon Beach on August Monday went to Barry and Dinas Powis girls. Pretty model Eira Roberts was the winner, adding yet another title to her long list. Eira, aged 22, is now married to a Barry schoolmaster and lives at Port Road. Second was 18-year-old Wendy Coombs, of Sir Ivor Place, Dinas Powis, who is rapidly making a name for herself in beauty competitions in the area.

* Barry Town signed five promising young amateurs after the club’s preliminary trial at the Port Road Recreation ground on Saturday. Manager Alf Sherwood was particularly impressed by inside forward Robert Armitage, a well-built youth from a Cardiff junior club and by Keith Jenkins, a hefty six-foot centre forward from Penarth Town, who is particularly fit and a fine prospect. Others signed up were John Griffiths, an inside forward or outside left, Dick Price, another outside left, and Roger Howells, a goalkeeper, all from Cardiff Junior Clubs.

* Barry Town Council have been accused of putting profit before community service by considering booking a professional pantomime into the Memorial Hall in the new year at the expense of the all-amateur Barry Arts Centre.

* The 45th birthday celebrations of Barry town twins Frank and Dennis Brown started early last week when Frank joined his brother on what could be a unique family "double" of 100-plus blood donor sessions. Out in front on the139-mark is Dennis, while Frank has just reached his century after starting later in the day.

* A £2,500 arson attack which destroyed 200 deck chairs at Pencoedtre Park, Barry, on Thursday night, cast a shadow over the town’s Carnival Week festivities.
