EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 19, 1959: *For the second time since he was first elected to the House of Commons in 1951, Mr Raymond Gower, Conservative MP for Barry, will try to change the law affecting leasehold houses and flats in Wales.

*An 18-year-old Barry boy, Alan D Kimber, son of Mrs I Rowley and stepson of Mr Rowley, of Guy’s Road, Cadoxon, is on his way to achieving his ambition – to be a chef. Earlier this year he was awarded the Hotel and Catering Institute’s Travelling Scholarship, which will enable him to spend a year on the Continent.

*Barry’s senior telephonist has retired after 43 years service. Vera Wareham started at Barry Telephone Exchange as a learner in 1916 and has the distinction of having served the whole of her career in the same exchange.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 15, 1984: *SuperTed, the brainchild of Barry-born Mike Young, has scooped a major American prize – a silver medal in the animated children’s series category at the International Film and Television Festival in New York.

*A piece of collage work, "My Lovely Garden," by five-year-old Laura Thompson of Station Road, Rhoose, is among over 100 exhibits in an exhibition of collage work by children at present on view in Wales. *The ever popular musical South Pacific – a story of wartime romance set on a tropical island – was brought to life by the recent production of the Barry Arts Centre at the Barry Memorial Hall.
