EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 28, 1959: *Dr Sandy Luen and his wife, Paula Luen, arrived in Barry on Sunday having travelled by air from Baroda, India, where he is conducting anti-malaria research for the World Health Organisation. He spends most of his time in the wild jungle and is usually accompanied by his wife on these expeditions.

*The War Office have confirmed the appointment of Major W Russell Davies, MC, TD, to command the 5th Battalion Welch Regiment, TA, as from Tuesday, August 4, when his promotion as lieutenant-colonel comes into effect. Major Davies, who lives at Clement Place, Barry, is 43 and is employed at the National Provincial Bank, Broad Street.

*The Barry Branch of the British legion is to contact local clergy and ministers with a view to organising a public protest meeting against the removal of plaques, containing the names of the Fallen, from the Hall of Memory, at the Memorial Hall.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 24, 1984: *History was made this week when, for the first time ever, Barry Town Council overturned their original choice for the office of Town Mayor. In a shock, unprecedented move, Labour used their narrow 12-10 majority to thwart the formal swearing-in of the leader of the Tory group, who had been democratically nominated as Mayor-Elect only five weeks earlier.

*Up to 70 permanent new jobs - mostly for skilled craftsmen - could soon be on the way at Barry Docks. The crunch will come next month when officials at the Welsh Office study deadly-serious £1m-plus plans by a consortium of experienced businessmen to set up a ship repairing and dismantling facility at No 2 Graving Dock, which has been standing idle for many years.

*The Vale are to settle "debts" of over £3,000 owed by the local St John Ambulance Brigade at their new purpose-built lifeguard and first-aid posts on Barry Island.
