A council house building programme of 200 houses per year should be the aim of the a Housing Management Committee, it's vice-chairman said at a meeting on Monday when he advised members to "badger" full council in an attempt to reach this target.

Whitsun of next year - that is to be the opening date for the £2 million Butlin Holiday camp at Barry Island. Delays caused by formal proceedings and bad summer weather have been further added to by the construction of the re-sited coastguard station.

The upwards trend of trade at Barry Docks was more pronounced during the four weeks ended September 26. The total traffic at 246,804 tons was 81,023 tons higher than for the corresponding period last year, and the total traffic to date this year at 1,485,002 tons is now 186,792 tons up.

Barry's Old People's Week sponsored by the Corporation's Entertainments Committee, was a bigger success than ever this year, and attendances at the Memorial Hall set a new record.

Wool boucles, retaining their popularity of last year, and jewel-coloured tweeds were featured in slim-line coats at a fashion show presented by Ann of High Street to members and friends of the Romilly Women's branch of the Barry Conservative and Unionist Association in the Churchill Lounge of the Wyndham Club on Wednesday week.

Barry Island enjoyed some late season revelry on Saturday week when Barry Round Table held its first annual Area Cabaret Competition.

Entries in Barry Angling Society's open competition fished at Porthkerry and pebble Beaches on Sunday were slightly down on last year's record attendance of 300, but, nevertheless, it was an extremely successful event.

In glorious spring-like weather Barry took the field and play by both sides was fast and open. This was a match in which the emphasis throughout was on attacking rugby, much to the delight of the spectators.
