Extracts from the Barry & District

News of September 23, 1965:

People in various parts of Barry have reported whining, humming, droning, pulsating noises on the night of Wednesday week. Several of them also state that the noises were accompanied by flashing lights, but most of them are not keen to give their names.

The new Barry Boys' Secondary School, Colcot Road, will be finished in six weeks time, members of the South East Glamorgan Divisional Executive were told at a meeting in Cardiff on Wednesday week.

The fire at the bottom of Tynewydd Road on Thursday evening was not extinguished without leaving its mark on Barry's seat of government - the Town Hall.

For almost half an hour members of the Finance and Establishment Committee were forced to sit in darkness, for the electricity supply had been cut off on account of the fire.

The sole source of light in the Council Chamber was a small gas light which afforded little or no illumination. When eventually the supply was switched back on again, the public business was almost over.

The works to be included in this season's programme by the Barry philharmonic Choir have long been favourites with choral societies everywhere. The main work will be Mendelssohn's Elijah. Lighter works to be performed are Hiawatha's Wedding Feast and the thrilling Finale to Act II of Aida. A concert of carols, which has an unfailing appeal with choirs and audiences, will also be given.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the opening of Salem Baptist Church the church has been renovated and decorated throughout and the front entrance has been given a new appearance.

Shortcomings were revealed in the Barry 1st XV which played Mountain Ash at home on Saturday and it is to these that the brunt of the blame for the decisive 15-6 defeat could be attributed.

The junior division made a belated start to the season on Saturday with three games. Trinity look as if they engaged top gear right away, for they defeated Rhoose 6-1. Aneurism Rovers, too, seem to be in top form and defeated Bonvilston 7-3.
