News of September 9, 1965:

There is good news for the hundreds of Barry residents who are awaiting living accommodation from Barry Town Council.

Preliminary work is in an advanced state on the initial stage of the giant Gibbonsdown Council Housing Estate, the Public Works and Planning Committee heard on Monday. This initial scheme, which is on the northern extremity of the site, covers some 45 acres.

News has been received that a former Barry woman has gained the highest mark in Canada in the 1965 Royal Conservatory of Music examination for Speech Arts, and has been awarded the conservatory's Gold Medal for her achievement.

The Barry and District Association Football League has donated the sum of one guinea to the local appeal for the St John's Ambulance Brigade. Further donations may be forwarded to the mayor at the mayor's parlour, Town Hall, Barry.

Hope that the Rhoose Fete held in the field opposite the Glamorgan Airport, on Saturday, would become an annual event was expressed by many people who enjoyed themselves in spite of a cold wind.

Colourful floats started a procession at Fonmon, and they included two floats from the Fonmon Estate, one from Aberthaw Cement Company and one manned by Cardiff Sea Cadets.

Barry Dockers have got away to the best start of the season in Division 1 of the Barry and District League. They recorded decisive wins against two teams last week and were in fact, the only first division team last week to obtain maximum points from their first two games.

High hopes for a successful season for Barry Town took a severe jolt on Saturday when they were eliminated from this season's FA Cup in ignominious fashion by Lovell's Athletic.

The annual championships of Barry Swimming Club returned to the Knap Lido on Friday after a lapse of several years.

By transferring the events from November to the beginning of September, it is intended to give swimmers keen competition when their training programme for the competition season is nearing its completion for WASA and county championships which are held in September and October respectively.
