Extracts from the Barry & District News of May 28, 1964:

• Dinas Powis Sea Cadets made a gallant bid to win the Inter-Cadet Road Race from St Athan to Dinas Powis on Saturday, an event which attracted 10 teams from the Glamorgan area. The winning team over a route through Rhoose and Port Road was Rhondda West Sea Cadets whose time was one hour 55 minutes. Second were Dinas Powis who finished in two hours two minutes.

• At Barry Magistrates Court on Monday, Supt Reg Jones described as riffraff a number of young men who were concerned in various incidents which led to disturbances at Barry Island on Whit Monday.

• An unusual suggestion – that the Town Council should organise a competition for the best-kept house among its tenants - was made by Cllr William Beddis at a meeting of the Housing Management Committee on Monday. It will be interesting to see how housewives react. The committee was considering its annual gardens competition – it was decided to carry on along the same lines as in past years – when Cllr Beddis intervened.

• “Join the Forces and see the world” is a recruiting slogan for the Forces which does not always materialise, but it has proved true for two Barry lads on active service with the Royal Signals. They are Lance-corporal Peter Cole of Pencoedtre Road, Cadoxton who has been in the Far East since December, 1961, and Corporal Peter Evans of Miskin Street, Barry. They linked up as pals when Corporal Evans arrived in the Far East in September, 1962, both of them being posted to the 249 Signal Squadron in Singapore.

• The Barry Rowing Club had something to celebrate this weekend for they made rowing history. For the first time since the club was formed in 1892, a Barry crew won the junior four event and thus carried off the MacDonald Challenge Cup.

• Welsh International Don Ashton (Barry Athletic) achieved the best performance by a local bowler in the Welsh Open Singles Championship, held at Dinas Powis last week. Ashton reached the semi-final on Saturday fighting hard against the eventual winner, Colin Williams of the Penhill Club.
