Extracts from the Barry & District News of January 16, 1964:

• Mr Billy Butlin is to give £1,000 to each of eight seaside resorts – including Barry – for advertising purposes. Concerned about the increasing number of people going abroad for their holidays, M Butlin believes that an intensified advertising campaign by British resorts would meet the competition being offered by Continental resorts.

• King William ‘A’ won the Barry & District News Cup ladies knockout skittles competition for the first time when they beat Sea View Lights at the Services Social Club on Thursday.

• A protest against what he described as an “apartheid” policy so far as the letting of houses to foreigners was concerned was made by Cllr William Beddis at a meeting of the Housing Management Committee on Monday. The only criterion should be that of a residential qualification, irrespective of where they came from, he said.

• Mothers with young children will now be able to go out and meet other mothers and make new friends without having the problem of needing someone to babysit, for a club is to be formed in Barry, where mothers can take their babies with them.

• If the recommendation of the Barry Housing Management Committee is accepted by the Town Council, then there is prospect of a speedy improvement in Barry’s desperate housing position. They proposed to erect 100 factory-built houses on a site at David Street, which had previously been earmarked for a caravan site.

• Local tradesman Mr Carl Fulgoni, of Heol-y-Bryn, Barry, who is known all over Europe as a leading authority on budgerigars, gained another five successes at the World Championships held at Harrogate, Yorks. Mr Fulgoni took the trophy for the best Red-Eye in the show, and gained first prizes in four other sections of the show, which attracted an entry of over 3,500 birds.

• The total trade which passed through Barry Docks in 1963 amounted to 1,958,682 tons, an increase of just over 200,000 tons on the figure for 1963, 1,755,714 tons, figures released by the British Transport Docks Board revealed last week.
