EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 14, 1963:

• Despite strong protests from Independent members, Barry Town Council at its meeting on Monday decided to ignore a previous decision of the authority and go ahead with further negotiations with the Ravenseft Development Company, which has submitted the original plans for the proposed redevelopment of the area on the north side of Holton Road.

• Barry has now passed the halfway stage of its target of £5,000 for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, the main contribution in this week’s list of donations to the Mayor’s Fund being the result of the mannequin parade organised by the Barry Townswomen’s Guild and a special Harvest Thanksgiving donation by the Mount Pleasant Church.

• On Monday night, many members of Cadoxton Conservative Club, Vere Street, gathered to see four of the club’s oldest members honoured. They were Mr J Hortop, of Wyndham Street; Mr J Bailey, of Main Street; Mr S Kettlety, of Palmerstown Road and Mr S Baker, of Arthur Street, who have been members of the club for over 50 years.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of November 17, 1988:

• Labour members of South Glamorgan County Council have been accused of deliberately dragging their feet on plans to redevelop Barry’s town centre in order to make political capital from the scheme at next year’s county elections. The charge was levelled by Vale council Conservative leader Cllr Percy Chapple during a Finance Committee discussion on the possible postponement of joint Vale-county talks on the subject.

• More than 34 years of outstanding police service came to an end recently when Detective Chief Inspector Jack Evans, of Rhoose, retired from the South Wales Constabulary. With an amazing record of 32 commendations – most of them from High Court judges – to add to his long service and good conduct medals, Mr Evans can look back with pride on a police career that fittingly ended in Barry where it all began.

• Barry florist Wendy Davies was honoured to prepare presentation posies for Princess Margaret and guest soprano Susan Bullock at the St John Ambulance charity gala at St David’s Hall in Cardiff last week.
