• A Barry soldier, Corporal Davie Bruford of Clive Road, Barry Island, who is serving in RAF Khormaksar Fire Brigade, Aden, was one of the firemen who recently helped to halt what was one of the worst blazes seen in Aden.

• For eight years Edward Hawkins has carefully shepherded scholars from Gladstone Road Junior School across the busy road outside the school. A familiar figure, kind but firm, who took an interest in the youngsters and earned their affection and trust! When Mr Hawkins retired from his post as school crossing patrol supervisor pupils spontaneously brought their pennies, threepenny bits and sixpences to buy him a farewell gift.

• A major redevelopment scheme in Barry’s main shopping centre, which will create between 30 and 40 new jobs, is being supported by a £367,000 loan from the Welsh Development Agency. • Concern over the long-term implications of a major holiday and leisure complex planned on the outskirts of Barry has prompted Vale borough councillors to call for further talks with the developers.

• Current Barry Athletic Tennis Club champion Martin Edwards recently met his match in 86-year-old Jack Crisp, the club’s longest surviving champion. Jack, of Jenner Road, Barry, joined the club in 1919, six years after its formation, and won the title in 1928. The get-together was organised as part of the club’s 75th anniversary celebrations, with a group of past champions meeting at Jack’s home to talk over the developments of the sport and the club.
