EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 26, 1988:

* Fears that a ‘distributor road’ running through a Barry estate would become a ‘race track’ have been voiced by residents in their bid to block a new development of 55 homes. The road, which would link recent housing developments on the east side of the town between Pencoedtre Road and Coldbrook Road, is included in the plans by Rendell Partnership Developments Ltd for land off Pencoedtre Road.

* Joint talks between the Vale borough and South Glamorgan county councils had led to an agreement for an immediate upgrading of King Square. It is expected that the scheme will cost in the region of £200,000 with 75 per cent of the cost being met from a Welsh Office grant.

* The Mayor of Barry – 28-year-old Cllr Jacqueline Price – has rejected the ‘notion’ that the office of mayor should be non-political. Speaking after her installation at the annual meeting of Barry Town Council on Monday week, Cllr Mrs Price said: "It is my intention to carry out the duties of this office reflecting the fact that the majority of the party of this council is the Labour Party, which the people of Barry endorsed in the elections in May."
