* A pupil at the Barry Boys’ Grammar School, Graham Williams, has been awarded an open scholarship at the Royal College of Military Science at Shrivenham. Graham, 19, lives at Trem-y-Don, Barry. The scholarship will be taken up in September.
* Frank Thompson of St Paul’s Avenue, Barry, who is well known throughout South Wales for his singing, took three firsts, a second a third and a fourth at the British Railways Music Festival held at Reading recently.
* Cardiff on Saturday to take part in the Cardiff Angling Society’s open competition on the Cardiff foreshore. C Wareham of the Barry Club, won second prize with his catch of three flatfish weighing 1lb 5oz.

* Barry teenager Philip Mizen, who has overcome a physical handicap to become an active and enthusiastic Scout, has been awarded the South Association’s Meritorious Conduct Medal.
* The Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council is taking steps to ensure that an ambitious plans for a 100-bedroom hotel on the outskirts of Barry is not just another ‘glorified pub and restaurant.’
* Following an illustrious career on the world’s most famous opera and concert stages Robert Tear returned home for his first public appearance in Barry on Wednesday week at the Memorial Hall.
